Frequently Asked Questions
What travelers ask us before booking a tour with Machu Picchu Exploration
Where is Machu Picchu Exploration located?
We are based in Cusco, Peru, and specialize in tours to Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, and the Inca Trail.
How do I book a tour?
You can book directly through our website using our secure booking form, or contact us via email or WhatsApp for personalized assistance.
Do I need tickets to enter Machu Picchu?
Yes, all visitors need a Machu Picchu entrance ticket, which we include in most of our tours.
Are Inca Trail permits included?
Yes, our Short and Classic Inca Trail packages include all required permits. Booking early is recommended, as permits sell out quickly.
How do I get from Cusco to Machu Picchu?
Most travelers take a train to Aguas Calientes (the town at the foot of Machu Picchu) and then a short bus ride up to the citadel. The train leaves from Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley, or from Poroy near Cusco. The other option is to trek there, for example on the Inca Trail or the Salkantay Trek.
How many days do I need to visit Machu Picchu?
You can visit Machu Picchu as a one-day trip from Cusco by train. Many travelers prefer to spend a night in Aguas Calientes for a more relaxed visit, or to add the Sacred Valley and a trek. Tell us how much time you have and we will suggest an itinerary.
What is the best time to visit Machu Picchu?
The dry season, from April to October, has the clearest skies and is the most popular time. The rainy season, from November to March, is greener and quieter, but rain is likely. Machu Picchu is open all year, although the Inca Trail closes in February for maintenance.
Do I need to book Machu Picchu tickets in advance?
Yes. The number of daily entries is limited, and tickets and train seats can sell out weeks or months ahead, especially from May to September. We recommend booking as soon as you know your dates.
How high is Machu Picchu, and will I get altitude sickness?
Machu Picchu sits at about 2,430 m (7,970 ft), lower than Cusco at about 3,400 m (11,150 ft). Altitude affects people differently. To help your body adjust, take it easy on your first day, drink plenty of water, eat light meals and avoid alcohol. If you feel unwell, tell your guide.
Can I customize my tour or travel privately?
Yes. Our tours are private, and the pace, start time and stops can be adapted to your group. We can also combine Machu Picchu with the Sacred Valley, Rainbow Mountain, Humantay Lake or a trek.
What languages do your guides speak?
Our guides lead tours in English and Spanish. If you need another language, ask us before booking.
What should I bring to Machu Picchu?
Bring your passport, comfortable walking shoes, light layers and a rain jacket, sun protection, a refillable water bottle, and a camera. Large backpacks and tripods are not allowed inside the site.
