Itinerary

Day 1: Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) Hike

This adventure starts from Cusco with pick-up from your hotel early in the morning (4:00 AM). We then drive for approximately 3 hours in private transportation to the point where the hike begins. Breakfast is included before the hike.

From this point, hiking to the Rainbow Mountain viewpoint takes approximately 2 hours. Along the way you will enjoy views of the Peruvian Andes’ red mountains, glacial peaks, and plenty of llamas and alpacas.

As you get closer to the Rainbow Mountain viewpoint, you will start to see the signs of the colored minerals that formed the painted hills, leading up to a strategic location with a 360-degree view of the sacred land. At the top, you will have enough time to enjoy the majesty of the colored mountains.

After about an hour at the top, we hike back to the trailhead, where lunch is included, before returning to Cusco by car, arriving around 4:00 PM.

The summit reaches approximately 5,200 meters (17,060 feet) above sea level. Travelers should be acclimatized to Cusco’s altitude before attempting the hike.

From start to finish, our experience with Machu Picchu Center was extremely professional. Immediately after booking, we received a detailed itinerary and all the e-tickets we would need, and the team was always available by email to answer questions as we prepared for our arrival in Cusco. The entire experience was incredibly well organized. From the pick-up and transfers to guidance about equipment and what we would need for the trek, everything was taken care of, allowing us simply to enjoy the experience. A very special mention goes to our wonderful guide, Jimmy, who met us at the train station and stayed with us throughout the day. He was extremely knowledgeable, attentive and, above all, incredibly supportive — especially during the more challenging moments of the climb. His encouragement and help made a real difference. The trek itself is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful experiences in the world, and having such a professional and caring team made it even more memorable. The only area that could perhaps be improved was the briefing the evening before the trek, which we found a little unclear. However, once the day began, everything ran flawlessly. I lead a group from Los Angeles and brought along 16 kids ages 15- 21. As I prepared the trip, one of my biggest concerns was who would the tour guide would be like. I have to say that the success of my trip was in part due to Mr. Jimmy. He was knowledgeable, passionate and and an overall great human being. Mr. Jimmy understood my group’s concerns and acted patiently and supportive, specifically during an emergency situation when one of my students got dangerously ill before getting to Puno. His assistant and coordination with ambulance, hospital and hotel, allowed me to focus on my student. I will be forever grateful for his support and encouragement.
